Rap Sh!t, created by Issa Rae, starred Aida Osman and KaMillion as two struggling rappers based in Miami trying to make it big. In her review of season two, A.V. Club reviewer Quinci LaGardye lauded the show’s commitment to depicting the realities of its main characters’ lives, while also hoping that it would dip back into some lighter humor in its third outing. We unfortunately won’t get to see that wish realized any time soon (unless the show is picked up by another streamer, of course).
“We are extremely grateful to Issa Rae for creating Rap Sh!t, a one-of-a-kind comedy with compelling social commentary that reached viewers in a way only Issa’s talents can accomplish,” Max said today in a statement (via The Hollywood Reporter). “A huge thank you to Issa, showrunner Syreeta Singleton and the teams at Hoorae and 3 Arts Entertainment for introducing us to Shawna and Mia, a duo whose journey fans have been invested in and who they have continued to root for through everything. We’ll never get Seduce and Scheme out of our heads and we wouldn’t have it any other way.” As of this writing, neither Rae nor either the of the show’s stars have addressed the cancellation on their own platforms.
Apple TV is also closing the curtain on light-hearted Broadway parody Schmigadoon!. “I am sad to share that Apple will not be moving forward with Season 3 of Schmigadoon!,” co-creator Cinco Paul wrote in a statement shared on Twitter/X today. He continued:
The season is written (including 25 new songs) but we unfortunately won’t be making it. Such is life. I want to thank everyone involved with the show, our incredible cast and crew and writers, our wonderful supporters at Broadway Video, Universal and Apple, for everything they did to make it happen. It’s a miracle we even got two seasons, honestly, and I’m so grateful we did. And to all the fans of the show out there—thank you with all of my heart. You love and support has meant so much, and the fact that you connected with out show, that it brought you some joy, means the world to me. This was tough news to get, but the optimist in me is convinced it’s not the end of Schmigadoon... and maybe it’s even a happy beginning.
Schmigadoon! starred Keegan-Michael Key and Cecily Strong as a struggling couple who stumble into a world where classic musicals are real. Key and Strong were joined by a host of A-list Broadway talent, including Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Dove Cameron, Aaron Tveit, Ariana DeBose, Jane Krakowski, and more.
