The Deliverance—a new exorcism flick coming to Netflix—just dropped its first trailer. That’s not to be confused with The Exorcist: Believer, David Gordon Green’s terrifyingly bad 2023 take on the iconic franchise, or Mike Flanagan’s upcoming attempt at a repossession. It’s also completely unrelated to The Exorcism, an equally terrible Russell Crowe-starring pic from last month investigating the urban legends surroundingExorcist, or last year’s The Pope’s Exorcist, which also stars Russell Crowe and is about exactly what it says in the title.

Exorcisms have clearly possessed the hearts and minds of Hollywood for some reason, but not a single one of the aforementioned films has been anything close to “good.” Lee Daniels—who received a Best Director nod in 2010 for his film Precious—clearly hopes to change that.
“After moving into a mysterious house, a struggling mother must face down her demons in order to save her children’s souls,” The Deliverance’s logline reads. The script—was was written by Daniels along with David Coggeshall and Elijah Bynum—was inspired by the true story of the 2011 Ammons haunting (also known as “Demon House”), which occurred when a mother, her three children, and their grandmother allegedly experienced supernatural events at their home in Gary, Indiana.
The film stars Andra Day as the mother, Ebony, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor as their exorcist, Reverend Bernice James. It also stars Glenn Close, Anthony B. Jenkins, Caleb McLaughlin, Demi Singleton, Mo’Nique, and Omar Epps.
The Deliverance premieres on Netflix August 30.
